Tragedy unfolded at Phantasialand in Brühl when a 43-year-old staff member lost their life on Monday afternoon while working on the “Taron” roller coaster. Initial findings from the district government of Cologne’s occupational safety and security department indicate that the victim, an employee of the park’s technical department, sustained severe head injuries after being struck by a rail. Despite efforts to save them, the employee passed away shortly after the accident.

On Tuesday afternoon, Phantasialand confirmed that the park would proceed with its scheduled opening for the new season on Thursday. In a press release, they stated, “The circumstances surrounding the workplace incident do not impact the safety of the ride or the overall park visit experience.”

The “Taron” roller coaster is a multi-launch coaster, known for its multiple acceleration points reminiscent of a catapult, situated within Phantasialand’s themed area “Klugheim.” The manufacturer states that the roller coaster spans approximately 1.3 kilometers and boasts railway cars capable of reaching speeds of up to 117 kilometers per hour. The attraction was inaugurated at the conclusion of June 2016.

As per Dirk Schneemann, spokesperson for the district government, occupational health and safety specialists conducted initial inquiries at the accident site on Monday. Investigations are still ongoing, with the district government maintaining close communication with both Phantasialand and the police. At present, no further details can be provided, as stated by the spokesperson. The police of the Rhein-Erft district reported that the incident took place around 3 p.m. on Monday.

According to Phantasialand’s statement, the deceased was a dedicated employee with a long tenure. The accident happened during routine maintenance work. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated on-site, and emergency services were promptly contacted. Despite exhaustive efforts, the employee couldn’t be saved,” the statement continued. The company asserted that the victim’s family is receiving unwavering support “during this challenging period.”
A gofundme has been set up for those wishing to support the family during this difficult time.
