Brühl – Phantasialand, a popular theme park in North Rhine-Westphalia known for its immersive lands and themed attractions, is under scrutiny following claims that some artwork in its “The Golden 20s” Berlin themed area was generated by artificial intelligence (AI). As originally reported by wa.de (link to original article in German), the park has firmly denied these allegations, the controversy has sparked heated discussions online.
The themed area in question, part of the “Berlin” land in Phantasialand, is designed to immerse visitors in the vibrant Art Nouveau atmosphere of 1920s Berlin. The land, which previosly served as the parks primary entry sequence, features severall attractions like an interactive dark ride, a theater and cafés. However, recent posts by user Double-Ask-7569 on Reddit have questioned wether or not the park simply used AI to generate art, rather than hiring an artist to create original pieces for the Berlin themed area.

The Reddit user initiated the debate by sharing photographs from the Berlin themed area, suggesting that some of the artwork appeared to be AI-generated. Phantasialand describes the themed land as featuring “Artful shop windows, magnificent stucco” on its official website. The user pointed to noticeable inaccuracies often caused by AI generated images. Especially in regards to mistakes in facial features, nonsense typography and hands as evidence of their claim.

The post quickly gained traction, with several commenters expressing disappointment. “With the love and care they did put in creating themed zones, this feels cheap. Paying real artists shouldn’t be a problem. Let’s just hope it doesn’t become an habit.” writes DesteRat on Reddit. While user Rene1993In added, “Phantasialand always cheaps out in the wrong places. That’s just sad.”

The outcry on social media has been met with a response from the park. A spokesperson for Phantasialand addressed the issue via wa.de, stating, “Images generated by an AI tool are not used in this form at Phantasialand” (translated from German). Phantasialand did not elaborate on the origin of the contested artwork.
Two of the images posted on Reddit appear to be historical photographs, which either need to be licensed or staged with actors, a set and professional photographer. Another of the images features what appears to be illustrated artwork. This would traditionally need to be designed and executed by a professional illustrator. A process that requires many hours of dedicated work, creativity and talent.

AI-generated art is controversial because it challenges traditional ideas of creativity, authenticity, and artistic labor. Critics argue that AI lacks the emotional depth and intent of human artists, while concerns also arise over job displacement, intellectual property issues, and the devaluation of human-made art. Ethical questions about transparency and fairness further fuel the debate, as AI art often displays noticeable flaws and may be produced without proper credit or compensation to original artists.
