Since 1963, the park has showcased only the pea from the story, displayed on a cushion in both the Fairytale Museum and the Efteling Museum. This new addition marks a significant expansion of the tale’s presence in the park, following the introduction of “The Six Swans” in 2019. “The Princess and the Pea” will become the 31st fairy tale represented in the Fairytale Forest. Construction is scheduled to begin this autumn.

Sander de Bruijn, the head designer and manager of Efteling’s Design & Experience department, drew inspiration from a sketch by renowned artist Anton Pieck for the design of the new scene. “His (Anton Pieck’s) working method and perfection are still the starting point for new designs in the World of Efteling,” de Bruijn noted. Efteling’s designers will utilize the new hotel as a backdrop to highlight the smaller gazebo, creating a connection to the Efteling Grand Hotel and emphasizing the theme.

The Story
The tale recounts the story of a prince in search of a true princess to marry. One stormy night, a princess from a faraway land arrives at the palace. The queen, intrigued by her, decides to test her authenticity by placing a pea under twenty mattresses and twenty down blankets. According to legend, only a real princess would be sensitive enough to feel the pea and be unable to sleep.
