BEDFORD, England — Universal Destinations & Experiences, a division of Comcast Corporation, has officially named its planned United Kingdom theme park and resort, with destination development now underway. The project, branded Universal United Kingdom Resort, is set to become the first Universal-branded theme park and resort on European soil and represents one of the largest single investments in the UK tourism sector in history.

Comcast NBCUniversal has committed more than £5 billion in construction investment over an expected five-year build period, with an additional £1 billion earmarked for capital expenditure during the first decade of operation. The company projects the resort will generate approximately £50 billion in combined direct and indirect economic benefit for the United Kingdom over time.

A Long Road to Opening Day
The project has been years in the making. In December 2023, the company confirmed the purchase of a nearly 500-acre parcel of land in Bedford, England, as it explored the feasibility of a major new theme park and resort on the site. Throughout 2024, the company conducted extensive due diligence and held discussions with local and national stakeholders.

A public engagement campaign in spring 2024 drew considerable interest. Nearly 1,500 residents attended in-person events, roughly 100 local organizations participated in consultations, and more than 6,000 survey responses were submitted — with over 92 percent of respondents expressing support for the project.

In April 2025, Comcast NBCUniversal formally announced its intent to build the resort, and by December 2025 the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government approved the company’s request for planning permission to be granted via a Special Development Order. The official naming of Universal United Kingdom Resort and the start of destination development were announced in June 2026. The resort is expected to open in 2031.

Jobs and Economic Impact
Universal projects that construction will support approximately 20,000 jobs, with more than 5,000 workers on-site at peak activity. Once operational, the resort is expected to generate around 8,000 permanent positions. The company has indicated that approximately 80 percent of employees are expected to be drawn from Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas.

More than 100 people in the UK are already employed on the project, and Universal has reported receiving expressions of employment interest from over 33,000 individuals.

Beyond direct employment, the company has positioned Bedford as a potential hub for innovation, citing the resort’s capacity to bolster the UK’s creative industries and expand workforce opportunities across the region.

Visitor Projections and Tourism Goals
Universal anticipates the resort will rank among the most-visited attractions in Europe, drawing millions of visitors annually — including more than one million international tourists per year. The company has framed the project as a significant driver for UK inbound tourism more broadly.

Global Context
Universal United Kingdom Resort is the latest in a period of rapid international expansion for Universal Destinations & Experiences. The company opened Universal Epic Universe in Orlando in 2025 and is simultaneously developing Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas — its first destination designed specifically for young children. New attractions such as Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, billed as Universal Studios Hollywood’s first high-speed outdoor roller coaster, are also in the pipeline.

Universal Destinations & Experiences operates as part of Comcast Corporation, the global media and technology conglomerate that also owns NBCUniversal and the UK broadcaster Sky.
