Beloved characters Ed & Edda are showing off their new look via the parks official Instagram profile, marking another evolution in the iconic characters’ decades-long journey at the theme park destination.

The mouse duo, who have served as Europa-Park’s official ambassadors since the park’s early days, have received a comprehensive redesign that emphasizes a more childlike aesthetic. The characters have been updated multiple times over the years, but this latest transformation represents one of the most significant changes to their appearance.

A More Youthful Design
The most striking changes can be seen in the characters’ facial features. Where the previous design featured more angular and structured heads, the new Ed & Edda sport rounder, more childlike faces with noticeably fluffier fur and human teeth.

The eye design has undergone a dramatic transformation. The previous smaller, oval-shaped eyes have been replaced with large, round, cartoon-like features. Both characters now share the same bright blue eye color, creating a more unified look between the pair.

The overall aesthetic has shifted from realistic proportions with a slightly more mature appearance to something more stylized and cartoon-like. The new costumes also feature more fitted clothing, though Ed & Edda maintain their signature casual outfits of t-shirts and jeans.

The redesign has sparked considerable debate among Europa-Park enthusiasts on social media, with reactions ranging from cautious optimism to outright disappointment.

Instagram user zanza_klaus expressed nostalgia for earlier versions: “I grew up with the Ed from the 90s and loved every new development in his design. But this interpretation is really not appealing. It reminds me of the movie Sonic before the backlash.”

Similarly, ep_brothers24 was direct in their criticism: “Personally, I don’t like it very much! The old ones were simply better!!!!” However, some fans are taking a more measured approach. User saja89 noted: “They look super fluffy. You always have to get used to new things first.”
Part of Broader Character Evolution
This physical redesign follows Europa-Park’s introduction of a new digital look for Ed and Edda last year, coinciding with the release of their animated film “Grand Prix of Europe.” The movie featured the mice with updated designs that differed from their previous park appearances, suggesting an effort to synchronize the character designs across all media.

Europa-Park, located in Rust, Germany, opened in 1975 and has grown to become one of Europe’s most visited theme parks, welcoming over 5.7 million guests annually before the pandemic. The park’s commitment to regularly adding new attractions, like Voltron Nevera last year, and the GRAND PRIX EDventure this year demonstrates its dedication to staying relevant in an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape.
