Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Winter Efteling recurs annually, offering park visitors an array of delightful decorations, unique activities, meet-and-greets, and exclusive snacks. Spread throughout the Efteling park, the event encompasses various areas, with a concentration mainly on the park’s left-hand side, as depicted on the park map.

Winter Efteling Decorations
The park was adorned with numerous Christmas-themed decorations, creating a captivating ambiance, particularly enchanting as night fell around 4 pm, showcasing the park’s exceptional lighting arrangements. Notably, key decorative focal points included a grand Snow Globe situated prominently near Droomvlucht, providing a charming photo opportunity where visitors could enter and activate a snow effect.

Adjacent to Symbolica, there stood a luminous butterfly installation touted by Efteling as this year’s premier decorative feature. However, I must confess that it failed to make a significant impression on me. While the promotional images depicted a captivating sight, with the butterflies seemingly hovering above park visitors’ heads, the reality fell short.

The cumbersome equipment required to suspend these installations was plainly visible, particularly in dim lighting conditions, detracting from the overall aesthetic. Even during daylight hours, the installation appeared somewhat disorganized, failing to evoke the awe-inspiring moment envisioned by its designers. Nevertheless, innovation inevitably involves trial and error, and while this particular endeavor may not have met expectations, I applaud Efteling’s ongoing commitment to innovation.

Yet, the standout attraction was the “Warme Winter Weide” or “Warm Winter Meadow” in English, where Efteling transformed a vast field into a mesmerizing winter wonderland. Previously utilized for Efteling anniversary celebrations, it appears to be their preferred venue for pop-up events and festivities. The Warme Winter Weide boasted numerous chalets offering merchandise and snacks, along with a charming ice skating rink, seating areas, and an opportunity for a photo with Pardoes (or Pardijn, depending on the timing of your visit). Thanks to our prior booking of the Efteling equivalent of a one-day photo pass, we were able to capture professional photos with Pardoes.

Efteling’s digital-first photo system proved to be incredibly user-friendly: simply scan the QR code provided by the Efteling photographer or enter the photo number displayed upon exiting an attraction, and it seamlessly appears in the app. Currently, there are two versions of the Digital Photo Pass available: the day pass, which we opted for at €25, and the Hotels & Resorts pass, valid for up to seven days, priced at €35. Additionally, the Digital Photo Pass offers a 30% discount on other photo products, such as key rings. Overall, the user experience far surpasses that of DLP’s PhotoPass system, showcasing the seamless integration and commendable efforts of the Efteling App team.

While Winter Efteling excelled in thematic decorations and various experiences, minor improvements could enhance sightlines, especially considering seasonal foliage loss and visible infrastructure. Concealing unsightly elements, such as cables and service areas, particularly visible from the “Stoomtrein,” could elevate the overall immersive ambiance. Despite these minor considerations, Winter Efteling showcased world-class decorations and theming, reflecting Efteling’s commitment to detail and enchantment, akin to renowned theme park destinations like Disney and Universal.

Winter Efteling is a special seasonal event inside Efteling park. It began on November 13th, 2023 and ran until February 4th, 2024. Winter Efteling reoccurs on a yearly basis and celebrated its 25th anniversary this time around. Park goers can look forward to experiencing a bunch of beautiful decorations, special activities, a meet and greet, as well as unique snacks. The event is spread out over Efteling park, so not all of it is in one concentrated place. That being said most of it occurs on the left hand side of the park (when looking at the park map).

Special Activities
Park attendees can anticipate a multitude of enjoyable experiences, including an enchanting ice skating rink, special character encounters, and the sheer delight of embracing the park’s wintry decorations. Moreover, the majority of Efteling’s attractions operated as usual during our visit, which occurred on a day with pleasantly low crowd levels. Visiting in mid-November proved advantageous, with most attractions either offering immediate access or having short wait times. Additionally, we utilized the accessibility entrances for the first time, benefiting members of our party who faced challenges navigating stairs.

This experience highlighted a notable contrast between American-designed parks like Disneyland Paris, which generally minimize the use of stairs, and European-designed parks, where staircases feature prominently, often due to spatial constraints.

Speaking of accessibility, during a recent visit to Phantasialand, I encountered the FLY roller coaster, which, despite its impressive steampunk coal miner theme, featured an excessively stair-intensive queue layout. Unfortunately, the coaster’s flying-type design, coupled with facing the direction of travel, triggered motion sickness for me.

On a brighter note, I can attest to the accessibility of most Efteling attractions we wished to experience. The standout was Symbolica, offering a dedicated waiting area equipped with benches, catering to those who may struggle with prolonged standing. Additionally, the boarding process was efficiently managed, with parties summoned individually to a separate boarding zone, ensuring a seamless experience without impeding the main loading area. Symbolica, in particular, exemplifies excellence in dark ride entertainment.

During our visit, we also enjoyed the Ravelin show for the first time, featuring captivating giant set pieces and a storyline reminiscent of a classic battle between good and evil set in a medieval fantasy realm. While the dialogue was primarily in Dutch, the engaging performance transcended language barriers, evoking a family-friendly atmosphere. Notably, the performers were originally trained by Puy du Fou, a French theme park renowned for its expertise in live entertainment.

Winter Efteling Food and Beverage Offerings
Numerous food options were available throughout the Winter Efteling Chalets, yet we only sampled the offerings at the “Ton van de Venplein Chalet” situated near the expansive snow globe. This particular chalet offered a selection of warm wintry beverages and cinnamon rolls. Opting for the Hazelnut Hot Chocolate, I found it to be exceptionally delightful, ranking among the best hot chocolate drinks I’ve experienced in a theme park setting.

Not only did the beverage tantalize the taste buds, but it also presented a picturesque sight, adorned with a luscious whipped cream topping embellished with hazelnut pieces and snowflake-shaped sprinkles—a truly charming touch. Due to the park’s early closing time at 6 pm on the day of our visit, our culinary exploration was somewhat limited. However, we did manage to indulge in some delectable pancakes at “Polles Keuken,” a topic we previously discussed in our Efteling-themed show.

Transitioning to olfactory pleasures, I must commend the Efteling merchandise team for introducing a unique concept rarely seen elsewhere: the sale of scents used within the park’s attractions. Personally, I acquired the Symbolica fragrance, reminiscent of sweet baked goods, which precisely matches the aroma experienced upon entering the attraction’s ballroom sequence. Furthermore, I discovered that the Efteling Hotel boasts its own signature fragrance, which has swiftly become my preferred scent. It’s perplexing to note that the hotel doesn’t diffuse this enchanting fragrance throughout its premises, an oversight that I find utterly bewildering given its divine aroma, which we have now adopted as our official home fragrance.
