Dutch theme park Efteling has confirmed that its newest ride, Hooghmoed (Dutch for “hubris”), will open to the public on May 1, 2026. The free-fall attraction will be located adjacent to the park’s existing Baron 1898 ride.
Hooghmoed is a drop tower experience designed primarily for younger visitors, with a minimum height requirement of just 90 centimeters
(approximately 3 feet). While adults are also welcome to ride, the attraction is aimed at adventurous children looking for a thrill. Each ride features sound effects and mist to heighten the experience.
The attraction’s storyline is tied to the existing Baron 1898 lore. According to the park’s narrative, a smelting facility next to the gold mine requires its towering chimney to be cleaned regularly, and riders take on the role of chimney sweeps volunteering for the job.
The ride consists of three lift towers, each carrying up to ten riders at a time. Passengers ascend to a height of 9.5 meters (roughly 31 feet), where the tower rotates to offer views of the surrounding themed area. The ride then simulates a malfunction — attributed to the mythical White Women of Dutch folklore — sending the car into a six-meter free fall through mist and smoke. After additional spinning and shaking, the roughly 90-second ride cycle comes to an end.
Each tower includes a seat designed for improved accessibility for guests with disabilities, though a transfer from a wheelchair is required. The ride is not recommended for pregnant visitors or individuals with heart conditions or back injuries. Children under 90 centimeters tall must be accompanied by someone at least 130 centimeters (about 4 feet 3 inches) in height.
