A longstanding theme park tradition dating back to the 19th century continues to evolve at Disneyland Paris, where specially designed popcorn carts showcase the intersection of historical innovation and modern theme park design.

Cretors first presented his automated popcorn machine at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The invention featured a steam-powered animated clown figure called “Tosty Rosty Man” that operated a popcorn drum, establishing a design element that would influence theme park aesthetics for generations to come.

When Disneyland opened its gates in 1955, the park incorporated Cretors’ carts along Main Street, U.S.A., maintaining the traditional animated clown feature. The Walt Disney Company subsequently adapted these designs across their global properties, including installations at Tokyo Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, and Disneyland Paris.

At Disneyland Paris, the carts are strategically positioned throughout the park’s various themed areas, each designed to reflect its specific location. The installations feature region-specific elements: western motifs in Frontierland, nautical instruments in Discoveryland, and Victorian-era decorative elements along Main Street, U.S.A. These carts can be found near major attractions such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Indiana Jones et le Temple du Péril, and Orbitron.

Walt Disney Imagineering Paris has announced ongoing development of new designs for the Popcorn Animated Dolls. The project, currently in production at the park’s central and couture workshops, will introduce updated figures across the property in phases.

This development represents the latest chapter in the evolution of a theme park fixture that began as a promotional innovation and has become an integral element of the Disney parks’ atmospheric design strategy. Subscribe to AirMagique for more updates and news.
