Efteling has dismantled the scaffolding encircling its latest attraction, Danse Macabre, unveiling the entirety of its structure for the first time: a 20-meter-high weathered abbey comprised of various levels, giving the impression of age with its broken support beams, crumbling towers, and abundant green overgrowth.

Traditionally, concealed attractions are constructed with a facade masking a basic structure. However, situated centrally within the park, Efteling opted to fully adorn the decagonal abbey from all angles.
https://anchor.fm/s/7618f58/podcast/rssThe level of detail varies across its surfaces; for instance, the rear facing the 4D cinema Fabula is relatively austere, featuring predominantly bricks and rough plaster, and is likely to be the least frequented by visitors, partly obscured by trees. A prominent green gate recently materialized beside the Fabula entrance.

Conversely, the front side is adorned more intricately, boasting eerie embellishments. Additionally, a new wooden roof structure has been erected behind the entrance, providing covered waiting space for visitors in the forthcoming queue.

Souvenir Shop
The exterior of the souvenir shop, Dr. Charlatans Kwalycke Zaken, which also serves as the exit for the attraction, is not yet fully completed. The entrance still lacks certain components. At the rear, construction is ongoing for a protrusion featuring a large opening. Eventually, the wooden roof beams will take on a weathered appearance.

The queue for Danse Macabre is situated at the Abbey Square, adjacent to the family roller coaster Max & Moritz and opposite the white water attraction Piraña. Visitors have two entrance options: the standard queue or a separate line for single riders. Single riders proceed directly to a staircase attached to the side of the attraction building, while other guests walk through the Kruysgang to the Kruydentuyn.

From there, they enter the Cemetery, adorned with tombstones and a mausoleum, setting the tone for the attraction. After passing among the graves, adventurous souls venture into a dark forest, culminating in the final segment of the queue within the area known to Efteling enthusiasts as the Witchpath. Access to the Danse Macabre, designed to resemble a dilapidated abbey, is granted via a large wooden bridge.

Choir Benches
The attraction features a revolving and tilting disc with six choir benches rotating on it. Visitors have the opportunity to dance along to the renowned classical piece of music while experiencing the eerie revival of the surrounding ruin. The ride system is supplied by the prestigious manufacturer Intamin based in Liechtenstein.

Music
The organ appears to be a fixture, as it has been integrated into the exterior design of the area. The entrance to the store resembles the old entryway of the now-vanished Ghost Lock. Tattered banners allude to a mysterious music competition believed to have occurred long ago. The passage leading to the Pardoes Promenade and 4D cinema Fabula is permanently closed off.

Directly across from Danse Macabre, a new building named ‘t Koetshuys is set to emerge. It will offer a selection of popcorn and cotton candy. Further down the path, where the former catering center Het Seylend Fregat once stood, a larger structure with three distinct purposes is taking shape. Previous permit documents indicate plans for restroom facilities among other amenities.

Ghosts
The new restroom facility has been given the whimsical moniker De Laetste Hoop. “By the way, don’t always expect tranquility when using the facilities here,” designer Verheij remarks. The central section of the complex functions as a staff area. Adjacent to the Piraña, In den Swarte Kat has been established, resembling a supermarket, with a backstory suggesting it was once a tavern.

The structure has suffered partial fire damage and partial collapse. Efteling promises an ‘expanded selection of packaged and fresh groceries. “And be warned: it can get quite eerie here at times,” adds Verheij. The terrace of Het Seylend Fregat remains intact.
Holle Bolle Gijs
Additionally, the ambiance is characterized by crumbling walls, lanterns, and a notable abundance of trees. Sailor Gijs’s niche, the iconic Hollow Bolle Gijs (themed garbage can) formerly situated behind the Ghost Lock, remains intact. Another trash bin is expected to be installed, fitting seamlessly with the theme of Danse Macabre. Danse Macabre is set to open this fall.
